DAFT visa: the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty

US citizens can start or run a business in the Netherlands under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty. It is one of the most accessible business routes into the Netherlands, with no points test.

Who it is for

Americans who want to work for themselves in the Netherlands: freelancers, consultants, creatives and founders. DAFT covers self-employment, not a job with a Dutch employer.

The main requirements

  • US nationality.
  • A real business. You trade between the Netherlands and the US, or you develop and lead a business in the Netherlands, for example by investing substantial capital or practising an independent profession.
  • Investment. For most business forms the IND requires a minimum investment of €4,500 in the business. Keep it in the business: the IND can check this later.
  • KVK registration in the Dutch Trade Register.
  • The general conditions that apply to everyone, such as a valid passport.

How long it takes

Because there is no RVO points test, DAFT files are often decided faster than regular self-employed applications. Renewals look closely at whether you kept your investment in the business and actually traded, so set it up properly from day one.

How Ascend helps

We set up your business structure, KVK registration and Dutch business bank account steps, prepare the application file and the supporting business documents, and plan your move with you. An independent accountant is included for your first set-up. Legal advice is handled by an independent lawyer, billed directly.

Questions people ask

How much do I need to invest for the DAFT visa?

For most business forms the IND requires a minimum investment of €4,500 in your Dutch business. The money must stay in the business.

Is there a points test for the DAFT route?

No. US citizens can rely on the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty instead of the RVO scoring system used for the regular self-employed permit.

Can I work for a Dutch employer on a DAFT permit?

DAFT is for self-employment. Working as an employee for a Dutch employer is not what this route is for.

Can my family come with me?

Your spouse and children can usually join you. We check your family situation in the clarity session.
