An innovative founder can live in the Netherlands for one year to launch a start-up, mentored by a recognised facilitator. After that year you switch to the self-employed permit.

Who it is for

Founders with an innovative product or service: new to the Netherlands, using new technology, or a new way of working. If your business is not innovative, the self-employed route is usually the better fit.

The main requirements

  • A facilitator. An experienced, financially healthy mentor organisation, with a signed contract. The facilitator may not hold a majority stake in your company.
  • An innovative product or service, assessed by RVO.
  • A step-by-step plan covering your organisation, roles, legal form, goals and planning.
  • Enough money for your stay of up to one year, on a Dutch bank account, or financed by your facilitator.
  • KVK registration for you and your facilitator.

How long it takes

The IND must decide within 90 days and needs positive advice from RVO. The permit lasts 1 year and cannot be extended. To stay, you apply for the self-employed permit and show a facilitator declaration covering at least 3 months of mentoring.

How long is the Dutch start-up visa valid?

The start-up residence permit is valid for a maximum of 1 year and cannot be extended. After that you can apply for the self-employed permit.

Do I need a facilitator for the start-up visa?

Yes. You need an experienced facilitator who mentors you under a signed contract. The facilitator may not hold a majority stake in your company.

What happens after the start-up year?

You can apply for the residence permit for self-employed people. You must meet its requirements and show a declaration from your facilitator that you completed at least 3 months of mentoring.
