Who it is for

Founders who plan to invest in and run a business in Portugal, and independent professionals with a contract or service proposal from Portuguese clients. There is also a start-up route for founders accepted by a certified incubator.

The main requirements

  • Entrepreneurs: proof of investment already made, or of financial means available in Portugal, and a clear intention to invest there.
  • Independent professionals: a contract or written service proposal and, for regulated professions, proof of professional competence.
  • Means of subsistence while the business gets going.
  • General documents: passport, travel insurance and a criminal record certificate, apostilled where required.

The law sets no fixed minimum investment. In practice the business plan carries the application, and a weak plan is the reason most often reported for refusals.

How long it takes

Consulate processing varies. The D2 visa lets you enter Portugal and apply for your residence permit with AIMA, where waits of several months are reported. The first residence permit is reported as valid for 2 years and renewable while the business stays active.

How Ascend helps

We write the business plan and financial forecast, check your means of subsistence and investment evidence, and build the consulate file. We also prepare you for the AIMA stage. Legal advice is handled by an independent lawyer, billed directly by the lawyer.
